Dove Street Youth Theatre
Who is it for and what does it do?
The Dove Street Youth Theatre was set up to encourage and empower the children who live in and around the Dove Street area. The idea is to give them positive, creative oppurtunities that can bring them and their families together, giving them something constructive which they can put their energies into and ultimately improving the community spirit.
Who created it?
Tristan Hancock, a trained actor was originally asked to set up the Youth Theatre. It proved to be so succesful that he went on to form his own business called 'Speaking Out' Creative Learning Workshops, and they now provide theatre workshops to other socially excluded groups.
How is it funded?
It was and is currently funded by the Dove Street Action Group. A number of local caring individuals, who fund-raise to improve the surrounding neighbourhood by bringing the community together through united efforts and artistic endevours.
What happens next?
Last year the Youth Theatre delivered a 10 week course, which culminated in an award ceremony to celebrate the childrens' achievements. This year we ran a 13 week course which finished with a 30 minute performance based on the subject of Gangs, which was aimed at the parents and local residents. The current photos are from a series of mask workshops which culminated in a performance at Dove Street Community Arts festival. Building on our successes we are starting a new series of workshops at the Elim church which has superb rehearsal facilities.

Safe-guarding Children
The safety and welfare of children is of great importance to us. All our staff are highly trained, are covered by public liability insurance and have had criminal record checks ( C.R.B.). We would like work in partnership with parents to make sure that children are safe and have fun during our activities.
